Uganda Parliament To Elect New Speaker And Deputy On Monday May 25th
The race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament in Uganda is highly competitive, with the inaugural sitting and election scheduled at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. Following intense power struggles and high-level meetings, incumbent Speaker Anita Among withdrew from the race, paving the way for the NRM to back Jacob Oboth Oboth.
Although ,West Budama Central MP, Jacob Oboth Oboth, has emerged as a frontrunner fro the Speakership alongside Thomas Tayebwa as his deputy , there are two other contenders in the NRM party who have expressed interest in the position of Speaker and these are Dr. Asiimwe Florence Akiiki and Alioni Yorke Odria.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially backed Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru for Speaker, centering their campaign on accountability and restoring the dignity of parliament.
Democratic Party President and Justice Minister Norbert Mao also entered the race, campaigning on an anti-corruption platform.
