MINISTERS GEN. KATUMBA WAMALA, MUSASIZI INSPECT THE KIIRA VEHICLE PLANT CALL FOR GOVT MINISTRIES AND AGENCIES TO FOLLOW PRESIDENT MUSEVENI DIRECTIVE TO  BUY   BUSES FROM KIIRA MOTORS

The Minister of  Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala  was joined by State Minister for General Duties at the Ministry of Finance , Planning and Economic Development , Mr. Henry Musasizi to tour the  magnificent Kiira Motors Vehicle Plant (KVP) at the Jinja  Industrial and Business Park and called on government Ministries and Departments to follow President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to buy vehicles made in Uganda .

The two ministers were at the Kiira  Vehicle Plant to follow-up on the progress so far made in construction of the facility which will be the largest in the East and Central African region producing at least 22 buses per day and 5,000 annually . The plant is being constructed by the UPDF Engineering brigade under the army’s business army -the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) led by Gen. James Mugira .

The Ministers were welcomed at the Plant by the Kiira Motors Corporation Ltd (KMC) Chairman Board of Directors , Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa  and the CEO Mr. Paul Isaac Musasizi.

While emphasizing the importance of sciences for industrial development Gen. Katumba Wamala thanked NEC for not disappointing government who entrusted them with the contract to build the vehicle plant to the internationally acceptable standards that we witness today . He said there has been value for money spent so far.

The Minister was happy note that unlike in the past where government ministries , departments and agencies used to work in silos- today they are better coordinated and there is  synergy to deliver quality public services.

Gen . Katumba  pledged his ministry’s continued support and cooperation to finalize the National  Automotive Development Policy , support KMC on their work to come up with internally acceptable  specifications and standards for vehicles ; licensing and vehicle registration.,

Minister Henry Musasizi promised that the Ministry of Finance will continue to  provide the requisite  resources to construct the ring road at KVP and called for the full capitalization of KMC as a govt company of strategic national  importance . 

He said that in order to have a sustainable economy , the country needs companies like Kiira Motors to ensure industrialization that will lead to jobs creation for the population , import substitution and value addition . “All these will improve the welfare of the ple in the long run ,” he noted.

The Board Chairman Prof . Tickodri-Togboa that President Yoweri Museveni and government for the  financial support extended to Kiira Motors that has be utilized to  construct  the plant and build vehicles  that are now transporting people across the country and in the East African Region .

Prof .Tickodri told the ministers that there was the urgent need to construct the ring road to enable easy access to the plant .

In his remarks , The CEO Paul Isaac Musasizi said that government has taken definitive steps towards building a robust , competitive and sustainable mobility industrial value chain in Uganda.

Some of the Kiira Motors products now on the market include the much famed Kayoola EVs – the fully electric buses and the Kayoola Diesel Coaches (KDC).
