The Uganda Police Force has reminded the public that the National Cleaning Day will be observed on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with a nationwide call for citizens to participate in a coordinated cleaning exercise aimed at improving sanitation and public health.
This follows communication from the Prime Minister , Robinah Nabbanja that government had designated every last Saturday of every month the official National Cleaning Day. During the exercise, communities across the country will participate in organised cleaning activities aimed at restoring cleanliness in public and private spaces.
The Government says the campaign will involve sweeping streets, clearing drainage channels, collecting and properly disposing of waste, slashing overgrown vegetation, and improving sanitation around homes, schools, markets, hospitals, trading centres, and other public places.
Nababanja said the initiative aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan, Vision 2040, the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union Agenda 2063, and the Public Health Act. It is also intended to promote environmental conservation while reducing the burden of diseases associated with poor hygiene.
According to Nabbanja , the Ministry of Local Government will coordinate implementation through district and city authorities, while Resident District Commissioners, Resident City Commissioners, and local council leaders will mobilise communities and supervise activities.
The Ministry of Health will provide technical guidance on sanitation and hygiene promotion, whereas the Ministry of Water and Environment will oversee proper waste management and environmental protection measures.
The Ministry of Works and Transport will ensure that roads and drainage systems remain clean and functional, while the Ministry of Education and Sports will mobilise schools to participate in sanitation activities.
Security agencies have also been tasked with supporting the exercise whenever necessary to guarantee order during the nationwide campaign.
The Prime Minister called upon all Ugandans to fully embrace the National Cleaning Days initiative, saying cleanliness is essential for protecting lives, preserving the environment, and supporting sustainable development.
Police has now come out to urge all citizens, motorists, traders, institutions, and local leaders to fully comply with the directive by actively participating in cleaning activities within their respective communities.
According to a police statement , movement restrictions will be enforced across the country during the three-hour period.
All vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and vessels will not be allowed on roads and water bodies, except in emergency situations. Traffic movement will therefore be restricted nationwide until the exercise concludes at 10:00 a.m.
However, several categories have been exempted from the movement restrictions. These include emergency services such as ambulances and medical personnel, individuals travelling for scheduled medical treatment who carry the necessary medical documentation, security vehicles operating on official duty, and cross-border vehicular traffic using major transport corridors.
The Uganda Police Force has also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with security personnel deployed to enforce the directive and avoid confrontations. Anyone requiring clarification or assistance during the exercise has been advised to seek guidance from the nearest police officer or supervisor on duty.
