Budget day :16 New Roads to be tarmacked across Uganda
The Government of Uganda has unveiled an ambitious and wide-ranging plan to upgrade the country’s road infrastructure, with a particular focus on tarmacking and maintaining more than 1,160 kilometres of key national roads in the 2025/26 financial year.
This bold move reflects a renewed commitment to economic transformation, rural accessibility, and regional connectivity under the National Development Plan III and Vision 2040.
At the heart of the initiative is a strong emphasis on inclusivity and national integration, with the government prioritizing roads that connect previously underserved communities to major markets, administrative centers, and service facilities.
Among the most significant developments is the planned tarmacking of the Bbulamuti–Kamuli–Bukungu road, which spans a total of 127 kilometers.
Also on the list is the 105-kilometre Kyenjojo–Kihura–Bwizi–Rwamwanja–Kahunge and Mpara–Bwizi road, a key corridor in western Uganda.
The route traverses several agricultural zones and refugee-hosting communities, and its upgrade is projected to enhance agricultural value chains and humanitarian response logistics.
The Kitgum–Kidepo road in the north, is another road stretching 115 kilometers, will provide a vital connection to the iconic Kidepo Valley National Park, boosting both tourism and regional development.

Other key road projects slated for tarmacking include the Ishasha–Katunguru road (88 km), the Luku–Kalangala–Mulabana route (65.3 km), and the Karenga–Kapedo–Kaabong road (73 km), which cuts through Uganda’s remote northeastern frontier.
Several urban centers are also benefiting from this plan. Jinja City will see 10 kilometers of its road network upgraded, while Kalangala Town Roads (10.67 km) and streets in Kaberamaido and Kalaki districts will also be surfaced.
In total, 16 new roads are set to be tarmacked, covering a wide geographical spectrum. Other roads on the list include the Nabumali–Butaleja–Namutumba road (72 km), the Kotido–Kaabong road (69.6 km), and the Kabwohe–Nyakambu–Bwizibwera & Nyakambu–Nsiika road (46.4 km).
In Mbale District, the Mbale–Nkonkonjeru road (21 km) and the Bubulo–Bududa circular road (25 km) are also included in the plan.
