The Government of Uganda officially declared Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as a nationwide public holiday.

The day is gazetted to allow all eligible citizens to travel to their respective villages and vote for their grassroots village leaders.

While LC1 elections occur on July 28, the Local Council II (LC2/Parish) elections are scheduled to follow shortly after on August 10, 2026.

Uganda Media Centre Executive Director Alan Kasujja, who said the holiday is intended to enable all eligible Ugandans to exercise their constitutional right to vote. “To enable you to participate in the Local Council Elections, 28th July, 2026 is a Public Holiday,” the statement reads.

The Electoral Commission led by Justice Simon Byabakama , has encouraged citizens to actively participate in the forthcoming Local Council I & II .

He advised voters to remain at their respective polling stations after casting their ballots to witness the counting of votes and ensure total transparency.
