Uganda Advances Lake Kyoga Connectivity with MV BKK Ferries Milestone
Government has commissioned the MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2 under the BKK Ferry Project to improve water transport and regional connectivity.
The modern ferries are now enhancing safe, reliable, and efficient travel across Lake Kyoga, linking the districts of Buyende through Bukungu Landing Site, Kaberamaido via Akampala Landing Site, and Serere through Kagwara Landing Site.

The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve access to markets, and strengthen trade and social interaction among communities surrounding Lake Kyoga. Residents, traders, farmers, and transporters now have a safer alternative to traditional watercraft, contributing to reduced transport risks and improved mobility.
Beyond easing movement, the MV BKK ferries are set to stimulate local economic growth by facilitating the transportation of agricultural produce, goods, and services across the lake. The improved transport network also enhances access to education, healthcare, and other essential services for lakeside communities.

The successful delivery of the BKK Ferry Project reflects Uganda’s continued investment in transport infrastructure aimed at promoting inclusive development, regional integration, and safer water transport across the country’s inland waterways.
