Kabalega International Airport in Hoima has officially welcomed its first three passenger flights on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The first aircraft landed in the morning carrying key officials from FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the AFCON Local Organising Committee.
And the subsequent flights carrying members of the national football teams, including the Libyan national team and the Uganda Cranes, arrived with Uganda Airlines.
The arrivals precede the high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match between Uganda and Libya scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the newly constructed Hoima City Stadium .
The $309 million airport facility has been built to support the region’s emerging oil sector and upcoming international events like AFCON slated to be hosted by Uganda , Kenya and Tanzania in 2027
Although the airport will be open to scheduled flights and emergencies, the facility is expected to be commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni early next year .
The airport constructed under the supervision of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority is expected to boost regional trade and tourism .
