One student has been reproted dead and severall others injured when a Friendship Coach bus registration number UAU 123Q)carrying about 100 students from Mwebaze High School collided with the daily commuter passenger train at approximately 6:34 am in Mukono.
The accident was registered at Katosi Level Crossing at around 6:30am involving passenger train and a bus belonging to Friendship Company ltd .. Eye witnesses said that the bus, traveling at high speed failed to stop in time for the train to cross .
Uganda Railways Corproration in a brief statement released indicated that at the time of the accident, the level crossing was manned by Railway Police Officer, and the bus was waved to stop but the drive disregarded the instructions leading to the fatal accident .
Uganda Police Force cordoned -off the Namumira-Bukasa village site to clear onlookers and secure evidence.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said police officers, working alongside other emergency responders, have evacuated the injured students to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment.
Kawala added that police have secured the scene and commenced investigations to establish the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash.
The bus driver fled the scene after the accident and police have launched a manhunt to arrest him to assist with the ongoing investigations.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations.
