Kiira Motors Birthday Gift to Uganda@60: More Buses Delivered for  Mass Transport

By Our Special Correspondent

This year’s Independence Day celebration will be a unique one of a kind as Uganda turns 60 on October 9th. For no bigger statement on the country’s economic independence has ever been written than the one coming from Jinja, the source of River Kiira aka River Nile.

For the first time since history began, Ugandans are able to travel in modern vehicles designed and built by Ugandans in Uganda.

This week began with the handover of five buses built by an indigenous company Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) for an  indigenous bus company Tondeka, to help kick-off mass transport in the capital city of Kampala. The buses are to be deployed on the busy Constitutional Square – Nakawa – Ntinda – Wandegeya route.

Tondeka’s buses come hot on the heels of Kalita’s two electric Kayoola  buses that were launched on August 28th to ply the 22-kilometre route that connects Busega on the southern western end of the city to Bweyogerere at the north eastern tip on Jinja Road.

Tondeka’s first buses have low emission engines for EU standards.. Kalita started off straight away with 100% electric buses, the Kayoola EVS designed and made by Kiira Motors Corporation -KMC.

These however are not the first electric buses on Uganda’s roads. KMC’s first two 100%electric buses were first deployed over two years ago by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on the 44-kilometre Airport – City Centre route.

The buses have in the process logged about 50,000 kms each without developing a single mechanical hitch.

The buses have been built in collaboration with the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces’ Luwero Industries (LI) in Nakasongola  as the Kiira Vehicle Plant first phase of construction works -nears completion at the jinja Industrial and Business park.

Kiira Motors Corporation is a mobility enterprise established to champion value addition in the nascent mobility industry in Uganda through technology transfer , contract manufacturing and supply chain localization .
