African Games: Uganda scoops first-ever badminton gold and two more medals
Uganda’s badminton sensational duo – Gladys Mbabazi and Husina Kobugabe delivered Uganda’s irs gold in the Women’s Badminton Doubles at the on-going 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Mbabazi and Kobugabe beat Algeria’s Halla Bouksani and Tanina Violette Mammeri to register a historic victory for Uganda.
In a two-set tie, the Ugandans won by 23-21 and 21-14 in the second set .
To make the final bout, Mbabazi and Kobugabe had gotten the better of Egyptians Hany Doha and Nour Ahmed Youssri.
“it’s a proud moment for us securing our country’s first-ever gold in Badminton,” Uganda’s coach William Kabindi said in an interview with the media.
“It is a testament to the hard work of our athletes. It is collective effort that has brought these results,” Kabindi added.
Meanwhile, Kobugabe secured Uganda’s second medal, a silver after a tight final with South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz in Women’s Singles.
That was in addition to Fadilah Shamika’s bronze which she scooped from the Women’s Singles.
