Karamoja Minister Gorreti Kitutu under fire for diversion and selling of relief items
Keith Muhakanizi , the Permanent Secretary , Office of the Prime Minister has issued a statement saying they have instituted investigations in the alleged diversion and selling of relief items including iron sheets for the vulnerable communities in the semiarid Karamoja region by Minister Goretti Kitutu’s relatives
Three family members of Minister Goretti Kitutu, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs have since been arrested for stealing and selling relief items meant for people in Karamoja. Those arrested include the minister’s mother, a brother and a nephew who were found in possession of government-owned iron sheets that were meant to be given to residents in Karamoja as relief items.
A joint operation by Internal Security Organisation (ISO), the Police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit found exhibits of the items at the family’s home before arresting the trio.
PS Muhakanizi stated , ” the alleged diversion of iron sheets against the intended purpose shall be investigated and action will be taken against the perpetuators including recovery and prosecution of those involved . we have requested the responsible institutions to speed up investigations . In addition , we have asked officials from the department of Karamoja Affairs to submit accountabilities for iron sheets that were released .”
