The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded the Commissioner for Refugees Management in the Office of the Prime Minister Patrick Okello, and the institution’s Assistant Information Technology Officer, Noel Ikwap to Luzira Prison on charges of abuse of office.
The two officials appeared before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe, who ordered their remand until August 10, 2026, when they are expected to return to court for the mention of their case and the hearing of their bail application.
The charges were instituted by the Inspectorate of Government (IG) as part of its “continued enforcement of accountability and the rule of law in management of public affairs .”
The Inspectorate of Government arrested Okello in June together with five officers and a Pakistani national over alleged involvement in extortion during the registration of refugees.
The Inspectorate of Government prosecutor, Mikka Luteete told court that investigations into the matter are still underway, and asked the court to adjourn the case to another date for mention.
“I pray that the matter is adjourned to another date to allow the Police to complete investigations in the matter,” Lutete.
The magistrate adjourned the case to August 10, 2026 for the hearing of the bail application.
Under section 10 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, the offence of abuse of office attracts a maximum sentence of seven years on conviction.
