Too Much Political Pressure : Finally , Uganda ‘s Anita Among Disgracefully Bows Out Of Speakership Race
The disgraced former Uganda ‘s Speaker of Parliament ,Anita Among, now under multiple international and local investogation about money laundering and plunder of public resources has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Among stated on her officila X account that after “wide consultations and deep introspection” aimed at maintaining “harmony and clarity” within the ruling NRM party she will not offer herself for the powerful seat she has enjoyed for the last five years with mixed reations from the general public.
“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” she declared.
The announcement was made at the time when security agencies around the country are carrying out searches to determine how rich she was and politically powewrful -while keeping billions of shillings in hard currency among other multi- billion assets . Her residences in in Nakasero, Kigo, and Ntinda have since been sealed off by joint security teams investigating allegations of illicit enrichment and money laundering.
Among in her statement further added ,”In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised,” she said.
President Yoweri Museveni has since endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth as the next Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Daudi Kabanda, the Secretary General of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), told guests at Oboth-Oboth’s thanksgiving ceremony in Mukono following his swearing-in as Member of Parliament for West Budama Central that he had been sent by CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to deliver the message about President Museveni’s endorsement of Oboth-Oboth.
The event was attended hundreds of MPs and several military serving generals . Kabanda told Oboth-Oboth amid applause that he would become the next Speaker of Uganda’s national parliament.
Gen Kainerugaba had earlier said PLU would back any candidate endorsed by the President. Kabanda also said they would recommend a female deputy speaker.
