After a series of high level meetings abd dialogue , President Yoweri Museveni has ordered for the reopening of the Nation Media Group (NMG) media outlets in Uganda , group’s msjority share holders Taifa Group ,have announced.
Museveni’s clearance comes a month after the media house was shut down by gthe military for alleged biasness againt the government of Uganda.
In their statement , now , Taifa Group which holds a majority stake in NMG has decalred that it will commit to goog corporate governance and responsible journalism across its Uganda platforms .
Taifa Group chairman Rostam Azizi thanked Museveni for allowing the re-opening noting that the directive was a result of “positive outcome of constructive engagement.”
“We are honoured by this decision and remain steadfast in our commitment to Uganda’s socio-economic development through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation,” Azizi said.
He said that Taifa Group supports NMG’s editorial mission, while emphasing professionalism and independent journalism in public discourse, good governance and national development.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to President Museveni for this important decision, and to General Kainerugaba for his support throughout the engagement that led to this positive outcome,” Azizi said .
“This decision demonstrates the value of dialogue, mutual respect and regional cooperation. Taifa Group will continue investing in opportunities that create jobs, strengthen institutions and advance shared prosperity across East Africa,” he added.
NMG chairman Joe Muganda said the media house will prioritise rebuilding its presence in Uganda and reconnecting with its audiences and stakeholders.
“We welcome the opportunity to resume operations in Uganda and to reconnect with our audiences, employees, commercial partners and communities,” Muganda said.
“Our immediate priority will be to restore our platforms responsibly, strengthen local content and provide Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels.”
He added that the group will leverage its regional footprint to support a resilient media industry while creating opportunities for talent and enterprise.
Earilier Tanzanian billionier Rostam Azizi met with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe to negotiate the reopening ofNation Media Group (NMG) Ugandaoutlets.
he meeting followed a military-led shutdown ordered by Gen. Muhoozi. Security forces had raided and closed down NMG’s Ugandan operations—including NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM—accusing them of biased reporting and running a blackmail campaign against the government.
