43 Ugandan Students Rescued From Iran By The UPDF Set To Return Home Today Evening

The some of the 43 Ugandan students rescued by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), acting through the Defence Advisor in Turkey, Major General Bob Ogiki, are set to return home this evening according to ministry of foreign affairs zources .

The students were relocated to Turkey, from where they will be airlifted back home .

This evacuation was executed following intense fighting between USA-Irael and Iran .Over the weekend, joint U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple locations across Iran including the capital, Tehran.

Among those killed included Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering immediate retaliatory attacks from Tehran and plunging the region into chaos.

The Government of Uganda has issued an urgent security notice advising all Ugandan citizens in the Islamic Republic of Iran to take serious precautions and, where possible, leave the country due to the deteriorating security situation.

In a statement dated February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, said government is monitoring developments in the Middle East “with grave concern” and called on all parties involved in the tensions to exercise restraint, prioritize dialogue, and avoid further escalation.

The government advised Ugandans currently in Iran who are able to do so to depart “through any possible means,” citing the increasingly volatile security environment.

Uganda has decided to withdraw all non-essential staff from its embassy in Tehran. The ministry noted that consular services will be severely limited for the time being as alternative arrangements are being put in place.
