WOMAN WHO WAS CONVICTED FOR MURDER OF FORMER ARMY COMMANDER GEN. KAZINI IS OUT OF LUZIRA PRISON AFTER SERVING A 14 YEAR JAIL TERM

Lydia Draru, the woman who convicted for the controversial murder of former army commander Maj.Gen. James Kazini is out of Luzira prison after she served her 14 year jail sentence.
The High Court convicted Draru for manslaughter and sentenced her to 14 year- jail term which she served at Luzira maximum prison .
During the sentencing Justice Monica Mugenyi acquitted Draru of the charge of murder, and instead found her guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter. The maximum sentence for manslaughter is life imprisonment.
The judge agreed with Draru’s lawyers Annet Mutabingwa and Musa Sembajja, who maintained throughout the trial that she did not intend to kill Kazini but acted in self-defence. It was alleged that Draru repeatedly hit Kazini with an iron bar on the head.
Gen. Kazini was found dead in a pool of blood at Namuwongo Project Zone, Wabigalo in Makindye Division, Kampala on November 10th ,2009. At the time ,Draru was said to have been a girlfriend to the former army commander, and confessed to have killed him.
Draru had served two years on remand by the time of her sentencing. Maj.Gen James Kazini, 52, at the time of his death -was hit with a metal pipe on the head and collapsed dead in the doorway. Draru 28 years old at the time ran out of the house wailing: “I have killed him! I have killed him! I have killed Kazini, call the police!”
