Uganda Committed To Digital Transformation In The Aviation Sector-UCAA DG Bamwesigye
Uganda’ is committed to embracing digital transformation in the aviation sector and its air navigation services have transitioned from reliance on only terrestrial navigation facilities (located on the ground) to also using satellite-based navigation systems in all the phases of flights.
“ While the terrestrial facilities are still important, new technology emphasizes using satellite-based systems under Performance Based Navigation (PBN) to enhance safety,” Uganda Civil Aviation Authority ,director General Mr. Fred K. Bamwesigye has stated .
In a speech read for him by Eng.Sooma Ayub the Director Airports and Aviation Security at the 15th Africa Region of International Federation of Air traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (IFATSEA), said that in addition to the traditional procedures, Uganda has implemented Direct Routing procedures, which shorten the distance flown and reduce fuel burns. This involves flying from point to point other than having to follow fixed routes.
“The other ANS technological advancement is adoption of Continuous Climb and Descent Operations with reduced workload to pilots and ATC, which has also enhanced passenger comfort and reduced noise and carbon emissions, among others,|” he said .
Held under the theme :“Digital Transformation in CNS/ATM: Strengthening ATSEP Competencies for a Safer and Sustainable Future” is being held at Munyonyo Speke resort in Kampala.
Bamwesigye noted that engineers in aviation form the backbone of air navigation safety.
“Their work underpins the safe and efficient operation of communication, navigation, and surveillance systems. As a regulator and service provider, UCAA remains steadfast in ensuring that our engineers are empowered through continuous professional development, skills upgrading, and exposure to modern technologies,” he told the delegates .
The DG said thatt UCAA was not only adopting technology but fostering innovation. “ I am particularly encouraged by the work being done by our Engineers under Research & Development, which has led to the development of indigenous systems such as the Balanced Scorecard Strategy and Performance Management Solution, the Aeronautical Billing System, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and many others. These solutions, fully developed by our internal R&D teams, demonstrate the untapped potential of the African engineering talent.”
