Museveni Rallies Ugandans To Honour The Country’s Heroes By Embracing Government’s Development Programs And Join The Money Economy

Addressing the nation on Heroes day while at State House via public media due to the outbreak of Ebola, President Yoweri Museveni has once again called upon Ugandans to honour Uganda’s fallen heroes by actively participating in all government development programs to ensure economic transformation at the household level and bring all Ugadans in the money economy .

Museveni said June 9 was gazetted to commemorate and honour Ugandans who lost lives during the many years of armed conflict in the Luweero Triangle and other parts of the coutry in order not to forget those who sacrified for the betterment of the country .

“The 9th of June 1981 was chosen to represent the hundreds of thousands who were killed, especially in the Luweero Triangle,, Skulls were collected from 32 communal graves and preserved as a reminder of the atrocities committed against Ugandans,” Museveni explained .

Museveni recalled that at the time the launched the liberation struggle in 1981, Uganda was in a crisis – with a collapsed economy , insecurity due to the many uncontroled armed groups , poor governance coupled with a lack of civic rights for Ugandans spanning over period of two decades.

Museveni said the liberation struggle was based on clear objectives that included the restoration of democracy, security, and rebuilding the economy.

“I thank the civilian and armed veterans who joined us in this struggle and helped achieve these goals. I also salute the families of those heroes who are no longer with us,” he said.

“The challenge before us now is economic transformation and ensuring that every household joins the money economy,” he said.

According to Museveni, the liberation struggle was guided by clear objectives: restoring democracy, guaranteeing security, expanding and diversifying the economy, and rebuilding the country.

He thanked both civilian and armed veterans who participated in the struggle and contributed to achieving those goals, while also paying tribute to families whose loved ones died during the conflict.

“I thank the civilian and armed veterans who joined us in this struggle and helped achieve these goals. I also salute the families of those heroes who are no longer with us,” he said.

Museveni noted that while significant progress has been made in restoring stability and rebuilding the country, Uganda’s current challenge is economic transformation.

“The challenge before us now is economic transformation and ensuring that every household joins the money economy,” he said.

Heroes Day is observed annually to honor individuals who made significant contributions and sacrifices in Uganda’s struggle for freedom, peace, and national development.
