IGP Byakagaba Camps In Kazo Following Increased Crime In Area That Has Left 14 People Dead

 Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, accompanied by the Director of Operations, AIGP Frank Mwesigwa, have conducted an operational assessment and engagement with police officers in the districts of Kazo, Ibanda, Kagadi and Kyankwanzi.

The visit followed concerns raised by political leaders and members of the public over crimes in the affected areas, including murder, theft of animals and crops.

Kazo District recorded 14 murder cases between July and September 2026.

The worst-affected areas include Nkungu, Buremba, Kanoni, and Ngari Sub-counties.

Most victims were attacked on the head using blunt objects. Police have arrested prime suspects in connection with several of the incidents

Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba , has since camped in Kazo and met with local security personnel, administrative leaders, and community stakeholders to review security gaps and direct tactical responses.

A prior security coordination meeting was held on September 30, 2026, at St. Catherine Secondary School Main Hall in Kazo Municipality.

The IGP held engagements with regional, district and sub-county police commanders aimed at realigning policing efforts and strengthening the response to the prevailing security concerns. He emphasized proactive policing, patriotism, teamwork and closer collaboration among officers at all levels.

He called upon commanders and personnel to make effective use of the available anti-crime infrastructure and operational enablers, including canine services, CCTV systems, communication equipment and police fleet.

To enhance implementation of the Sub-County Policing Model (SCPM), the IGP reinforced the affected districts with additional manpower and motorcycles. He, however, urged officers to fully internalise the model and deliberately put it into practical use in their respective areas of responsibility.

The IGP further directed officers to work closely with communities, strengthen information-sharing and build public confidence in the police response to crime.
