Five killed, 15 arrested as security forces foil attacks on police stations in Kasese and Bundibugyo

At dawn today security forces foiled simultenous attacks on police stations in Kasese and Bundibugyo killing five panga wielding attackers and arested 15 others. one policeman was injured in the attack.

Police said coordinated attacks were carried out by assailants across multiple areas within our police regions of Rwenzori West and Rwenzori East. In Rwenzori West, the attacks targeted the districts of Bunyangabu, Bundibugyo in Kakhuuka parish- Sindira subcounty, Fort Portal City around Nyakasura School and Canon Apollo Core PTC and Kabarole district.

In Rwenzori East, there was an attack in Kasese district on Kasese Police Barracks and Rugendabara Police Station by the same group of attackers.

“Several assailants were put out of action and many were arrested. While some police officers sustained injuries during the encounter, there were no fatalities were reported,” a statement by police said in part .

In Kasese Municipality, the assailants armed primarily with pangas (machetes) and catapults attempted to overrun the central police barracks and nearby facilities, including an effort to burn a police officer’s house in Kabugho; security forces responded with gunfire, killing at least five attackers on the spot—one of whose bodies was later cordoned off at Grace Cathedral compound—and arresting several others.
