EC Concludes Voters’ Register Display, Announces Next Steps
The Electoral Commission (EC) in Uganda has announced that the exercise for displaying the National Voters’ Register, which commenced on April 25, 2025, has successfully been concluded on May 15, 2025 across the country.
However there were technical issues at 620 polling stations where display will continue until May 20, 2025.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, stated thus; “This exercise is crucial for ensuring an accurate and inclusive voter register, which is essential for a transparent and credible electoral process.”
He called upon eligible citizens, especially those turning 18 for the first time, to participate in the process.
The EC had displayed the Voters’ Register from April 25 to May 8, 2025, for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including youths, persons with disabilities, and older persons at the village level. During this period, citizens were able to scrutinize the Voters’ Register and report to the Display Officer any persons who should be removed, such as those who have died, are under 18 years old, reside or originate from a different parish, or appear more than once on the register.
After the display, the Commission will proceed to display lists of persons recommended for deletion or inclusion by the Tribunal from May 16 to 26, 2025. The Parish/Ward Tribunal, appointed by the Magistrate of the area, will consider and make final decisions on recommendations for inclusion, deletion, or correction made by the public.
Justice Byabakama highlighted the importance of cooperation and adherence to guidelines during the exercise, saying, “This exercise relies on collective efforts. Cooperation and adherence to guidelines will be key to its success.” The EC has urged all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens, to actively participate in the process and ensure its success.
The final National Voters Register will be produced after the Tribunal process, and the EC will use it to conduct the first cycle of elections under the General Elections Roadmap, namely, elections of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees, scheduled for June 2025.
