Back On Track : Uganda Airlines Acquires Leased Boeing 737-800 From Ethiopian Airlines
Uganda’s national carrier, Uganda Airlines, has leased two additional aircrafts from Ethiopian Airlines as new management stabilises the company that recently suffered operational and management challenges expansion strategy.
The Boeing 737-800, acquired under a wet-lease partnership with Ethiopian Airlines will increase Uganda Airlines operational capacity and improve connectivity across the airline’s regional and continental network.
Under the wet-lease arrangement, the aircraft comes with crew, maintenance, and insurance services provided by Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa’s largest and most established carriers.
Aviation analysts say the move gives Uganda Airlines immediate operational flexibility while allowing the airline to expand services without the long timelines associated with purchasing and integrating new aircraft.
The Boeing 737-800 is expected to play a critical role in supporting the airline’s growing route network, particularly on medium-haul African destinations where passenger demand continues to rise. The aircraft type is globally recognized for its fuel efficiency, reliability, and suitability for regional operations.
Uganda Airlines described the development as a strategic step aimed at strengthening reliability, increasing flight frequencies, and ensuring smoother operations as travel demand rebounds across the continent.
The addition also reflects the airline’s broader ambition to position Entebbe International Airport as a regional aviation hub connecting East, Central, West, and Southern Africa.
Since its revival in 2019, Uganda Airlines has steadily expanded its footprint with routes spanning Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, Mumbai, Dubai, Juba, Kinshasa, and other destinations.
Industry observers note that partnerships between African airlines are increasingly becoming essential in addressing fleet shortages, operational costs, and route sustainability challenges. The collaboration between Uganda Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines is being viewed as part of a wider trend toward strategic African aviation cooperation.
The second leased aircraft is expected to join the fleet in the coming weeks, further strengthening the airline’s operational resilience amid rising competition in Africa’s aviation market.
For Uganda Airlines, the arrival of the Boeing 737-800 is more than just an addition to its fleet. It signals the carrier’s continued determination to rebuild Uganda’s aviation presence on the African continental while improving travel convenience for passengers across the region.
