Parliament Calls For Urgent Funding Of The Electoral Commission Ahead Of The 2026 General Elections
The Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee has called on government to urgently release the much needed Ug. Shs.756.9Bn to the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement the roadmap for the 2026 general elections.
According to , Mrs.Robina Rwakoojo, the Committee Chairperson, the EC’s planned activities for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years respectively, require a total of Ug.Shs.765.6 Bn. However, only Ug.Shs.8.6 Bn has been allocated .
“Many of the planned activities have statutory timelines and must be conducted in a sequential manner. Any further delays could compromise the integrity and fairness of the electoral process,” emphasized Rwakoojo.
The committee’s recommendation, presented during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Anita Among calls for urgent funding to enable the EC to fulfill its statutory obligations in the run-up to the general elections.
The MPs were also concerned about delays by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, to make provision of Ug.Shs.11Bn approved in 2017, to enhance the remuneration of the commission, which is still pending .
