Lands Ministry partners with Habitat for Humanity Uganda to host Uganda’s first Housing Symposium

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MLHUD) is partnering with Habitat for Humanity Uganda (HFHU) to hold the first ever Uganda Housing Symposium in commemoration of this year’s World Habitat Day.

The National celebrations will be held on Friday, 7th October 2022 during the Uganda Housing Symposium at Speke Resort Munyonyo under the theme, “affordable and inclusive housing solutions for all.”

The symposium will bring together national and international heads of key organizations, high ranking government officials, kingdom representatives, property developers, real estate investors, regulators academia, manufactures, financiers, contractors and outstanding members of society to discuss practical solutions top affordable housing.

Hon. Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development while addressing the media in Kampala said that Uganda is currently faced with a housing deficit of approximately 2.4million units which has to be addressed from a multi-sectoral approach by mobilizing both formal and non-formal housing finance for affordable housing by all sector players.

Over the years, Habitat for Humanity has been committed to mobilizing  partners, volunteers and community members across Uganda and beyond to find the solutions and help create the policies that will improve home affordability for millions of individuals.

Mr.Robert Otim, the National Director of Habitat for Humanity Uganda said that the goal of the Uganda Housing Symposium is to provide a sector-wide platform for showcasing innovations that support access to descent, affordable and inclusive housing while also addressing affordability, habitability, tenure security though a collaborative arrangement with all the stakeholders.

“At the Uganda Housing Symposium, will show case housing innovations and best practices across Africa and improve sector wide learning, our objective is to enable more Ugandans access low cost housing and live decently,” Otim said.

He further added that Habitat for Humanity will soon launch the rural model house that was built with interlocking soil stabilized blocks and also launch the urban prototype. “These 2 houses cost UGX 18,000,000 and UGX 32,000,000 respectively, these are some of the approaches that we as an organization are using to increase and enable more Ugandans to access low-cost housing,” said.

Since 1982, Habitat for Humanity has built and improved over 200,000 houses; transforming the lives of over 1.5 Million people and supporting over 2,000 youth acquire vocational training. They have also provided technical assistance and affordable housing solutions to over 10 financial institutions who have in term supported millions of Ugandans to own decent homes incrementally.
