Government through cabinet has directed that the controversial Rural Electrification Agency be mainstreamed as a department under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Permanent Secretary , Mr. Robert Kasande has revealed.
Kasande , in a statement also dismissed as falsehoods , claims that the Ministry had renewed the contracts of Eng. Godfrey Werikhe and Eng. John Turyagyenda as employees of the defunct REA. The PS was reacting to a fake letter purportedly written by President Yoweri Museveni complaining as to why the two officials’ contracts had been renewed.
Kasande clarified that the ministry had not renewed the contracts of the said individuals and that cabinet has decided to rationalize government agencies , commissions, authorities and public expenditure.
“Among institutions affected by the decision , Cabinet directed that the rural Electrification Agency should be mainstreamed as a department under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development,” the PS said in a statement .
He said that the Ministry is in the process of implementing those cabinet decisions and once the process is completed all employees including the head of the department will be recruited by the public Service Commission in accordance with the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders ,2010.
