Electoral Commission Summons Presidential Candidates Agents And Police To Enforce Campaign Guidelines

The Electoral Commission has held a closed door meeting with agents of the eight presidential candidates and leadership of the Uganda Police Force to reiterate the set campaign guidelines to avoid clashes and ensure a peaceful campaign program.
EC spokesperson, Julius Mucunguzi, said the meeting which sat in confidence was convened remind all parties involved about the commitments they made before the campaigns started .

“We convened a meeting of all agents of the candidates together with the police to discuss the progress of the campaign process so far. we wanted to hear and resolve emerging issues to ensure a peaceful process ,” Mucunguzi explained .
Mucunguzi, however, was happy to note that since campaigns kick-off on September 29 there have not been serious issues reported and the exercise thus far is – “largely peaceful.”
Sources privy to the meeting said the EC Chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama, warned security agents and some RDCs for being unnecessarily aggressive in the execution of their respective duties that creates tension “No RDC or security official has the authority to interrupt a duly-nominated presidential candidate’s campaign programme as long as its approved by EC ,” he is reported to have told the meeting .
The EC boss said the electoral body will keep monitoring the situation and will call upon those who flaut the rules to account.
