EC Set To Nominate Museveni As NRM Presidential Candidate Tomorrow , Tough Guidelines Issued

The Electoral Commission appointed Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24 September 25 as the dates for nomination of candidates for Presidential Elections, 2026. Aspirant Yoweri Museveni is set to be nominated tomorrow as the NRM Presidential Candidate .

Two other aspirants have also been cleared by the EC to contest the 2026 general elections and these are Nandala Mafabi for FDC and Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu for NUP.

The EC in its guidelines says that the nomination exercise will be conducted at the Electoral Commission Head Office Grounds, Plot 2508, Lubowa, Kigo-Lweza Road, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, starting at 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on both days.

Requirements for Nomination

A person aspiring for nomination as Presidential Candidate shall be a citizen of Uganda by birth, a registered voter, of 18 years and above. He/she shall submit certified copies of educational qualifications confirming that he/she obtained a minimum formal education of Advanced (A) Level or its equivalent.

The aspirant’s nomination shall be supported by not less than one hundred (100) persons who are registered voters, from not less than ninety-eight (98) districts, which form two thirds (2/3) of all the districts/cities of Uganda.

Aspirants must also fulfill all other requirements as listed in the Guidelines, in order to be successfully nominated.

  1. Nomination Paper (In Triplicate);
  2. Declaration by Candidates (Consent to Nomination);
  3. Proof of minimum Formal Education of Advanced Level Standard or its equivalent;
  4. Proof of registration as a voter for the candidate, the proposer and the seconder;
  5. Three (3) Recent Post Card Size Photographs of the Proposed candidate;
  6. Proof of compliance with Section 10(1) and (1)(b) and (3) of the Presidential Elections Act, Cap. 179;
  7. Certificate of Compliance issued by the Electoral Commission;
  8. Proof of payment of a Non-refundable nomination fee of Ug. Shillings 20,000,000/=
  9. Selection of Symbol (for Independent aspirants only);
  10. Appointment of Official Agent;  

Aspirants are urged to bring along a proposed campaign schedule with the starting date of 29th September 2025, to facilitate smooth harmonization after the nomination exercise.

Access to the Nomination Venue

The nomination venue shall be accessed by only persons who have been invited and accredited to participate in or observe the exercise. 

Further to the above, an aspirant, shall be allowed into the nomination venue accompanied by not more than twenty (20) persons (including the aspirant himself/herself).

The particulars of persons accompanying the aspirant shall be submitted to the Commission in advance.

An aspiring candidate will use only two (2) vehicles for purposes of his/her nominations; and each vehicle should not carry more than ten (10) persons, driver inclusive. Each of the vehicles shall bear a Police sticker.

The Commission strongly warns aspirants from mobilizing supporters to accompany them to and from the nomination venue, as processions are not permitted during this exercise.

For the avoidance of doubt, the incumbent President, who is also an aspirant shall use such facilities as are ordinarily attached to his office. This is in line with Section 28(2) of the Presidential Elections Act.
