The much anticipated Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULTU) Sacco Annual General Meeting (AGM), aborted following the arrest of the association’s Secretary General, Nathan Twinomujuni and the prolonged absence of Chairman ,Evans Kaganizo Mutesasira ,for most of the proceedings.
There was drama at AGM which drew hundreds of teachers in Bulindo, Wakiso District, as security forces surrounded the premises .
Later Mutesasira resurfaced and confirmed Twinomujuni’s arrest describing it as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”
He alleged that David Egesa, a patron of the union and an official with Operation Wealth Creation, was behind the arrest. Mutesasira accused Egesa of attempting to extort money after the Sacco received Shs 6.6 billion promised by President Yoweri Museveni.
“The funds were meant to benefit teachers, and we won’t allow anyone to misuse or divert these resources ,” Mutesasira said, calling for Twinomujuni’s immediate release.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ,Patrick Onyango, confirmed the arrest, stating that Twinomujuni was facing charges of misappropriation.
The Shs 6.6 billion in question is part of a Shs 20 billion pledge made by the President to support teachers’ Saccos across the country.
Following the chaos ,the AGM was adjourned to March, leaving many teachers frustrated and uncertain about the Sacco’s future.
