ZURAH NAKABUGO

Hajj Abbas Kaawaase Mukasa, a luminary in Uganda’s education sector, served as the head teacher of Kibuli Secondary School for 24 transformative years, from 1978 to 2002. Driven by an unwavering passion for academic excellence and sports, especially football, Kaawaase turned Kibuli SS into a beacon of success that inspired generations of students and educators alike.

Early Education and Academic Journey

Born on September 9, 1942, at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya, Kaawaase’s educational journey began in his hometown of Gomba district at Nakiju Primary School. He later transferred to Kitagobwa Primary School in Butambala, completing his Primary Six. In 1956, he joined Gombe Junior Secondary School for Senior One before enrolling at Kibuli Teachers’ Training College for a two-year programme, earning certification as a Grade 2 primary school teacher.

Kaawaase embarked on a teaching career at Gombe Muslim Primary School in 1961, where he worked for five years before upgrading his qualifications at Gaba Teachers’ Training College. After attaining Grade 3 certification in 1968, he taught P.7 at Nakiju Muslim Primary School while simultaneously pursuing his ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels.

In 1971, Kaawaase’s academic ambitions led him to Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with Education degree in 1974. This achievement marked the beginning of a remarkable career in secondary education, starting with his assignment at Masaka Secondary School. He later held key roles at Kololo High School, including Head of the English Department, Director of Studies, and Head Teacher, before his pivotal move to Kibuli SS.

Transforming Kibuli SS

Kaawaase’s tenure at Kibuli Secondary School began on September 11, 1978, when he succeeded his friend, Abbas Seguya. His leadership philosophy centered on discipline, hard work, and holistic development, aiming to nurture both academic brilliance and extracurricular excellence. Under his stewardship, Kibuli SS gained a reputation for producing top-performing students while excelling in sports, particularly football, which became a hallmark of the school’s identity.

Beyond academics, Kaawaase fostered a culture of transparency and collaboration, earning respect from students, staff, and the broader community. His influence extended well beyond Kibuli SS, contributing significantly to Uganda’s education system and setting standards that continue to inspire.

Family and Values

Kaawaase resides in Kawempe and is the proud father of 11 children, all of whom hold at least a Master’s degree—a testament to his belief in the transformative power of education. Born into a family of 28 children, he is the eldest son of Hajat Aisha Naggujja and Hajji Muhammad Nseera Kaawaase.

A devoted family man, Kaawaase is married to Hajat Zam Nakku Mukasa and Hajat Sofia Naggayi Mukasa. He credits his success to discipline and prayer, often invoking blessings for his successor, Hajj Ibrahim Ssemakadde, to elevate Kibuli SS even further.
