Christiane Amanpour to leave CNN after 43 years

Christiane Amanpour announced on October 19, 2026, that she is leaving the network after a 43-year career.

: Amanpour clarified that she is not retiring from journalism, but rather separating from CNN to pursue new opportunities.

Her daily program on CNN will transition to once a week through May/June 2027 before her final departure from the network. Her companion program Amanpour & Company on PBS is also scheduled to end.

: Her announcement follows recent corporate changes involving Paramount Skydance’s takeover of CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.

โ€œAfter more than 43 years at CNN, Christiane has decided that the time is right to begin a new chapter,โ€ Mark Thompson, CNNโ€™s chief executive, said in a letter to newsroom employees that was obtained by NBC News.

Thompson said Amanpour, 68, plans to โ€œscale backโ€ her eponymous CNN International show to once a week early in 2027. โ€œThe program will conclude in May,โ€ Thompson added, โ€œand she will leave CNN at the end of June.โ€

โ€œChristiane has thought carefully about this decision, and she and I have been discussing it for some months,โ€ Thompson said. โ€œLike so many CNNers who will hear the news today, Iโ€™m very sorry to see her go, but Iโ€™ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally.โ€

Amanpour has covered nearly every major international conflict and global crisis of the last four decades, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bosnian War, the Persian Gulf War, the post-9/11 U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Spring, Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine and Israelโ€™s war in Gaza.

She has also interviewed world leaders, including former President Bill Clinton, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi and various Iranian presidents, including Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hassan Rouhani.

In a statement, Amanpour confirmed her departures from both CNN and PBS, where she hosts the talk show โ€œAmanpour & Company.โ€ She also thanked โ€œthe amazingly talented people Iโ€™ve worked with throughout this incredible journey,โ€ especially her โ€œbeloved show teams and field crews.โ€

โ€œWe together battled to seek the facts, the evidence and the humanity, so that CNN could always broadcast the truth about the world and to the world, without fear nor favor,โ€ Amanpour said in part.

Thompson will remain the head of CNN under the brandโ€™s new ownership, reporting directly to Skydance co-CEOs Ellison and Ynon Kreiz.
