By Zulfah Namatovu

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has announced the launch of the Wagagai Gold Mine and Refinery in Busia District, a $150 million investment by Wagagai Mining (U) Limited.

This state-of-the-art facility will refine gold to 99.99% purity and produce up to 1.5 tons annually, positioning Uganda to end raw mineral exports and focus on local value addition.

Uganda boasts over 31.5 million tonnes of gold ore, with the Wagagai deposit alone accounting for more than 25 million tonnes. The refinery’s establishment marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s drive for industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification under the Mining and Minerals Act, 2022 and Vision 2040.

Beyond gold, Uganda’s mineral wealth includes graphite, iron ore, marble, rare earth elements, copper, and more—offering vast opportunities for investment and growth.

Government remains committed to providing geological data, improving infrastructure, supporting artisanal miners, and promoting environmental, social, and governance best practices.

The ministry of energy and mineral development has commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership, Wagagai Mining (U) Limited for its investment and all stakeholders for their role in advancing Uganda’s mining sector.
