Obed A Key Suspect In The Public Lynching Of A National Rugby Player Gongodyo Arrested

Security operatives led by the police have arretsed a boda boda rider named Obed (also referred to as Muyombya) in connection with the tragic mob lynching of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo.

On June 5, 2026, Gongodyo was attacked by an angry crowd in the Bukoto suburb of Kampala after being falsely accused of snatching a woman’s handbag. He was severely beaten with wooden logs and later succumbed to his injuries at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Security arrested a man known as Obed, who was caught on viral CCTV and video footage striking Gongodyo with a large wooden log. He was taken into custody on June 9, the same day Gongodyo was laid to rest in his ancestral home in Sironko district

Gongodyo’s family and legal representatives maintain that the rugby star was entirely innocent and simply an unfortunate bystander when the real thieves escaped.

This bring the number of suspects arrested to nine . Five additional suspects were arrested yesterday in connection with the death of Gongodyo.

This brings the total number of suspects in custody to nine ss investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.

The suspects arrested are ,Ssebagala Noordin ,•Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet,, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino , Tayebwa Darlious and Tugume Hannington

Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the gruesome incident.
