Ministry of Lands, World Bank and Arua District Officials Inspect USMID Projects

Officials from Word Bank, led by Mrs Christine Kasedde, inspected on going infrastructure construction works in Arua District under the World Bank funded Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development, Additional Financing (USMID-AF) programs.
The officials visited two bridges; Enyau 2 bridge located in Awindiri ward in Arua City and Enyau 1 bridge located in Odianyadri Village, Eruba parish, Vurra sub county, Arua District whose project cost is estimated at Ug.Shs.1.3 bn. The project works are being undertaken by Niem establishments Ltd.
During the monitoring tour the officials inspected the project works, the quality of materials being used and welfare of the labourers assigned by the contractor.
The District LC V Chairman Hon Alfred Okuonzi called for a balanced died for the labourers, stating that, when he was cross checking the visitors and registration books at Enyau bridge 2 in Awindiri, he came across a complaint poor feeding raised by some of the workers.
The contractor together with his staff while responding to the delegation’s queries about the issue of local content, said, they buy stones from a quarry site in Nebbi District and sands from Terego District.
After the successful implementation of the first phase of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Program, Government, has received additional financing to the tune of US$ 360 million from the World Bank/IDA to implement the second phase of the Program (USMID Additional Financing-USMID-AF) for 5 years starting in fiscal year 2018/19.
Headed by Dr. Isaac mutenyo the project which will close at end of this year , is designed to deepen impact and results in terms of institutional strengthening, planning and financial management, infrastructure provision and local economic development.
