Minister Gen. Otafiire Slams Police Over Acacia Mall Extra-Judicial Killings, Demands Action On Officers Involved

Minister of Internal Affairs, General Kahinda Otafiire, has sharply criticied the police force for the recent extra-judicial killing of six Ugandans in an operation at Acacia Mall.

Otafiire noted that the Ugandans were shot by the police because they were suspected of being robbers. Otafiire stressed that such actions are wrong and go against his policies on how Ugandans should be treated.

He stated that no Ugandan should ever be killed, especially if they are handcuffed or unarmed. Otafiire called for immediate action and accountability for those responsible for the killings, assuring the public that there would be consequences for such behaviour.

Gen. Otafiire whose ministry is responsible police work said tthat he had spoken to the Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba and made it clear that under no circumstances should a Ugandan be killed while restrained.

In addition to discussing the tragic shootings, Otafiire also addressed another important issue: police interference with the work of Members of Parliament (MPs). He criticised the police for stopping MPs from meeting with their constituents and said it is wrong for law enforcement to interfere in their duties. Otafiire pointed out that MPs do not need permission from the police to do their jobs in the areas where they were elected.

He emphasised that it is up to the citizens to decide how their representatives serve them, not for the police to control this interaction. Otafiire made it clear that such actions go against both his policies and those set by President Yoweri Museveni.

The Minister stated that he would seek explanations from the Inspector General of Police regarding these incidents and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that such mistakes do not happen again. He concluded by firmly stating that such behaviour would not be tolerated within the police force.
