Godfrey Aine Kaguta trounced his arch rival Shartsi Kutesa Musherure with a narrow margin in a largely peaceful by-election which was overseen by the NRM Electoral Commission ,Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi.
Final results had , Aine Sodo receiving 17,343 votes representing 46.3% while Musherure had 16,104 votes (42.17%) . The third contestant , Kiseka got 4,274of the vote. This particular race was postponed after the supporters of the rival camps became violent leaving many people with injuries.
There was heavy deployment of security as the two powerful and highly connected camps mobilised voters for their respective candidates. President Museveni did not take sides in the race although some of his family members were seen at Shartsi Kutesa Musherure’s campaign events.
Sodo’s campaign energized voters who considered him to be a home boy that was brave enough to stand against the all powerful foreign minister’s daughter and in-law to the first son Gen. K. Muhoozi.
Now with the primaries out of the way , Aine Kaguta Sodo is expected to be elected to the 11th parliament in the 2021 general elections.
