Uganda Signs Bilateral Air Services Agreements With Oman, Reviews New Air Routes After Successful ICAN 2024 Negotiations
Uganda has participated in the international Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation Event (ICAN) that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 21 to 25 October 2024.
The Uganda delegation, led by UCAA’s Deputy Director General, Mrs. Olive Birungi Lumonya included officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and Uganda Airlines.
ICAN, an ICAO annual Global Event, includes Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) negotiations and consultations between states with respect to air travel services.
At this year’s event, Uganda successfully concluded new BASAs, reviewed existing BASAs, and signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). BASA negotiations were held with Latvia (new), the United Kingdom (review), Qatar (review), The Sudan (new), and Ethiopia (review). Additionally, bilateral consultations took place with India, Botswana, Russia (new), and Malaysia (new). Notably, Uganda signed a BASA with Oman, further enhancing its international air service agreements.
Uganda’s participation in ICAN 2024 highlights its commitment to improving air connectivity and fostering international partnerships, paving the way for enhanced trade, tourism, and economic development.
