Rail Odinga : The Luo Tradition Of Passing On The Torch
Pictures of Winnie Odinga the last born of daughter of the late Kenyan former prime minister Raila Odinga handing over one of her father’s hats to her mother have been circulated widely on the social media . But what does this ritual mean in the Luo tribe of Kenya .
Winnie Odinga as the last-born daughter, she was given the sacred duty of caring for her father. Now after her father’s death , she was handing that duty back to her mother. Its called Osimbo Mar juogi
In Luo tradition, if it were the mother who had passed, the last-born son would do the same handing back the tach (responsibility) to the father, saying, “I did my best, I gave everything.”
The Luo people have deep and beautiful traditions. The last-born son gives everything to ensure the mother’s well-being.
The last-born daughter gives everything to ensure the father’s peace.
Now, Mama Ida Odinga will release Winnie, as the father has passed in her care.
