President Museveni commissions High-Altitude Training Centre in Teryet Kapchorwa

O President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned the much awaited High-Altitude Training Centre in Teryet Kapchorwa giving a major boost to preparations and training for Ugandan athletes that re known for dominating long distance races at the global stage .

The colourful ceremony featured President Museveni laying the foundation stone and inaugurating the world-class facility upon the completion of its first phase.

The facility is located at a 75 hectares of land with an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level and has since been recognized by the International Amateur Athletics Federation World Athletic in March 14th, 2023.

Phase I of the project includes several world-class features such as an athletic track, an artificial turf field, a jogging track, a hostel block, an external kitchen and dining hall, plus modern sports equipment.

President Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting sports and fostering growth in the Sebei region.

“We, as the government, are ready to continue supporting the sports industry,” Museveni assured. “We pledge to our gallant athletes that we shall walk with them on their journey to excellence and victory.”

State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, said that many athletes have already expressed interest in utilising the facility.

Prominent Ugandan athletes such as Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo have trained at Teryet in preparation for international competitions.

The facility is also expected to attract international athletes seeking high-altitude training, boosting sports tourism in Uganda.

The Sebei region, known for producing legendary athletes like Moses Kipsiro, Stephen Kiprotich, Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo, and Peruth Chemutai, now has a modern training hub to further cement its legacy as a powerhouse of talent in athletics.
