President museveni Approves Upgrade Of 9 New Town Councils
President museveni , has approved the upgrade of 9 town councils according to the ministry of Local government .
The town councils were approved following requests from local leaders and assessments by the ministry.
“These town councils were created to bring services closer to the people and promote local development We are not creating new districts, but upgrading existing sub-counties into town councils with functioning administrative structures,” the ministry stated .
Each district with a new town council will receive 1 billion Ugandan shillings (around $265,000 USD) to help with setting up headquarters and providing basic services and that particular administrative unit .
The Ministry of Local Government says operationalization of the new town councils will begin in the next financial year.
According to the ministry, more funds may be requested from the Ministry of Finance depending on the needs of each administrative unit..
The newly approved town councils include:
1. Kyanamukkaka – Masaka District
2. Mukuju – Tororo District
3. Bukedea Central – Bukedea District
4. Kabwangasi – Butebo District
5. Kamdini – Oyam District
6. Kasensero – Rakai District
7. Kidetok – Serere District
8. Obongi Central – Obongi District
9. Namasale – Amolatar District
The Ministry of Local Government says operationalization of the new town councils will begin in the next financial year.
