POLICE ARRESTS 1,300 IN BARS AS PRESIDENT MUSEVENI URGES UGANDANS IN RURAL AREAS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE COVID-19 HOTSPOTS IN KAMPALA AND WAKISO
At least 1,300 people were arrested last evening in a major Police swoop on bars across the Capital Kampala for breach of Covid-19 regulations.
Several bars in and around the city were targeted and these included Jac & Drew at forest Mall , Legends , Alchemist , Monte ,La Venti , Nexus , a Lounge among others .
Earlier Police had warned that it would scale- up curfew operations in Kampala after a new deadly Covid -19 -Indian strain was confirmed in the country.
President ,Yoweri Museveni , in his televised address to the nation last evening called on Ugandans in the villages not to travel to Kampala and Wakiso the most Covid-19 hit districts in Uganda . He said that the country had registered 690 new cases on Saturday alone brining the cumulative figure to 46,623 and 362 deaths recorded so far.
The number of people who have contracted the virus has increased and Museveni said a national taskforce will meet this week to address the problem . Health officials said that Uganda has registered the India Covid-19 variant B.1.617 which is more transmissible and affects mainly the younger age group.
“It is necessary to take cautious steps, in a view that people don’t use darkness to violate the Standard Operating Procedures and security. It is critical in easing up and therefore still necessary.”
