President Yoweri Museveni has told the members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary caucus who are attending a 10 day retreat at the National Army leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi- that they should desist from the habit of giving their constituents money which has led many MPs to be stressed with debts .
“You will get leaders who are indebted. Indebted leaders are dangerous,” President Museveni warned. The President was in the company of the First Lady Maama Janet Kataha Museveni.
Museveni advised the MPs that they should instead empower the wanaichi to engage in productive activities to generate income at the household level . “Tell Ugandans to embrace the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other Wealth Creation programmes to get into the money economy ,” Museveni stressed .
“Encourage people to modernize. Go from the traditional way of doing things to the modern way of doing things. Stop blocking my proposals. You are wasting time. By now, Uganda would be very far in development,” he added .
Museveni further stated ,”We must build cohesion across the chain of Ideology, Strategy, Policy making and implementation of programs in order to deliver value to our people. This retreat is a good opportunity for us to correct some of the mistakes like MPs using personal money to create wealth for their constituents and blocking developmental proposals sent to parliament, all of which affect the rate at which we are moving.”
The president warned the MPs against diving the population by engaging in the politics of identity .“Politics of identity against the politics of interest is what made the NRA differ from Kabaka Yekka party and UPC,” he stated .
Vice President Jessica Alupo was all smiles while delivering her speech
Museveni who is also the commander in chief of the armed forces assured the country that the UPDF has the capacity to decisively deal with the Al shaabab terrorists who attacked a base housing Ugandan soldiers last week .
The retreat, running under the theme “Increasing Household Incomes and Wealth Creation: The Critical Role of the Leader” is also being attended by cabinet ministers .
