CURFEW COULD END SOON AS MINISTER OF EDUCATION JANET MUSEVENI SETS DATES FOR REOPENING OF SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES
In an effort to calm growing anxiety among parents including those with candidate students the Minster of Education, Mrs. Janet Museveni has announced a new roadmap to re-open schools and universities as early as April 27th,2020.
In a statement to the nation, Mrs. Museveni announced that the 1st term which was suspended to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic will resume on April 27th,2020 and will run-up to June 12th,2020. This in effect means that a 14-day curfew that was declared by President Yoweri Museveni would have been lifted.
In what would come as a relief for many parents, Ms. Museveni said that there will be no additional fees charged when the first term resumes. She also stated that her ministry had suspended examinations during the COVID -19 crisis “because some students lack the infrastructure to do them.” Some schools and universities were preparing to conduct online examinations for their students.
“There will be no formal or end of term examinations at the end of the first term. Schools will only have one mock examination which will happen at the end of the second term,” she added.
The Minister said that the second term will commence on June 22nd and end on September 4th,2020. The 3rd term will open on September 21st and close on the 19th December 2020. The ministry has organized lessons for students on radio and TV.
Health and education experts, however, have called on the government to put in place safety measures for all institutions of learning before the first term resumes given that the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic will still be prevalent across the world.
